Coconuts are one of the most interesting fruits. That’s right, it’s not a nut at all, it’s a stone fruit! Not only can you eat the flesh of the fruit, but the water also has great health properties as well. Coconut oil is widely used both internally and externally for the body. They come with a large variety of fun facts, but here are the top 4 most interesting.

Harvesting Coconuts

A single coconut palm tree can have up to 180 coconuts harvested in one harvest. Make sure you bring a big enough basket with you if you go out coconut picking. Once the fruit has begun to grow, it usually takes anywhere from 6-7 months for it to be ready to harvest for the water. If you’re intending on eating the flesh of the fruit, you’ll have to wait another 5-6 months after the initial waiting time. Mature coconuts are brown and furry looking, whereas the younger sweeter ones are green and smooth.

Serving Containers

Coconuts can be used as bowls or even cups to serve food and drinks out of. Some island bars serve adult tropical beverages out of them. Other restaurants will serve desserts, like frozen sweets, out of them. Using the side of the coconut without the holes can keep the contents from leaking out of the fruit. At home, you can serve just about anything you’d like out of them, including entrées, chip dips, and even soups!

Coconut Husks & Fibers

The outer part of the coconut has been used for multiple things over many years. Long ago, fibers were used as parts of armor. More recently, it has been found that if you burn the husk, it makes a great insect repellent at your cookout or outdoor party. Other fun items made from husks and fibers are brushes, doormats, twine, particleboard, and even is material for mattresses and floor tiles.
